18 Most Popular Science Myths Debunked
Education’s major goal is debunking miseducation, which is identifying and correcting the several myths floating from the internet, folk wisdom. We all have heard of such myths at some point or another.
There are many myths but we have mentioned some of them that aim to clear up some commonly held misconceptions in the field of science.
1) A penny dropped from the empire state building can kill a person on the sidewalk
Which means if you were to drop a penny from the top of the Empire State building it would hasten to a point that it could kill a person on the sidewalk below. Well this is a myth. But in real the penny will reach terminal velocity of about 3200 miles per hour depending on the wind which is still a jerk move to drop a penny from up there. This motion might hurt but wouldn’t kill anyone.
2) The three States of matter- solid, liquid and gas
We all have heard that there are three States of matter solid liquid and gas, but it’s a Science Myths. There is a fourth one cold plasma which isn’t some gel or but it’s more like super heated ions or electrons, which is sometimes called ”Ionized gas”. Once it is cooled it becomes gas but then it takes on different properties too. So it’s not quite a kind of “Gas”.
This fourth state of matter is more like a flame. All The lightning fire the sun and the tail of comets are the plasmas. If elements are chemical compounds heated high enough they can become plasma, but since it is just ions and electrons the molecules have broken down. For instance water can be reduced to plasma but it’s no longer H2O, it’s not even hydrogen or oxygen and no one would want to drink it.
3) Toilet flush spin in a different direction in the Southern hemisphere.
Both North and South directions can be found in both hemispheres, but there is some science behind this myth and it really doesn’t apply to toilet flushes. Generally, this misbelief calls upon the Coriolis Effect, where earth’s rotation affects the flow pattern, which explains things like gulfstream for hurricanes but toilet flushes and even tornados are too small to be influenced directly by the coriolis effect. Moreover spiral’s direction is a product of other features such as toilet’s design, the plumbing and water pressure
4) Glass is a high viscosity liquid
As we all know that glass isn’t like water or even like molasses. Though, glass could be characterized as having super high viscosity such that it is an ultra slow flowing liquid? Well not really this misbelief arises from the fact that window glass is older buildings are generally thicker at the base. Imagine, the evenly thick glass gradually said over time, thickening the base.
But real glass is classified as a solid but long ago it was tough to get a perfectly even pane of glass using old fashioned methods. Also, people who used to make glass made a reasonably flat piece of glass they would then cut the class 2 size and if one side was thicker than the other did put that side on the bottom for stability.
5) Lightning never appears in the same place twice
Lightning never appears in the same place twice. The myth is not only wrong but it’s very dangerously wrong. The lightning strikes the same place twice very funny at least within a close vicinity. During a lightning storm if you find yourself standing out there is no outdoorsman or forecaster who will recommend you go and stand where lightning has already spotted. Moreover another related fact is that bananas are berries, but they don’t produce seeds so does that mean a banana split is a herb berry Sundae?

Many of us have heard that redwood forests, titanosaurs, etc. Are the largest living organism, but it’s a Science Myths we would like you to know that blue whale white with the largest ocean creature the redwood forest may include the tallest trees that titanosaur may have been the largest dinosaur in its day, Aspen trees called Pandav might be the oldest in the world, but humongous Honey fungus in the Oregon blue mountains is the largest living organism on the planet Earth. It’s a single organism that has thousands of mushroom fruiting bodies roughly 2.4 miles across. It’s still spreading but on the bright side it’s mushrooms are edible.

Duckweed, watermeal and poppy seeds are smaller than mustard seed, but the smallest seed on record is the orchid seed. mustard seed is the smallest one but it’s still pretty small as compared to other seeds shown by ancient and modern gardeners.
